They are legit but, BUT the best and finest panels that you can find have an efficiency rating 18% or less and these panels are very expensive.
If you don’t do windows, don’t get solar power, simple things like dust or bird crap can degrade performance of your system. Keeping the panels clean is a vital necessity.
I would say that the solar panel market is rather immature at this time, panels cost to much and efficiencies are to low.
With an average cost of $40,000 divide that into your average monthly electric bill and that is how long it will take to pay for the unit. Keep in mind that solar panels need full sun so it is likely that you will need to double the number of months that you come up with.

What nobody is mentioning is the rarity of the material used. That in part is what makes the panels so expensive. Not only are you talking about an inefficient technology, but you are talking about one that is constructed of rare materials.
There are 6 billion of us on this planet. We need food water and shelter. Shelter and food need most of the time, heat. We need a much more abundant and efficient source than solar power represents.
